Why We Left the PCA

The following blog by Lauren Kuo is reprinted here with permission.  It provides powerful testimony of the unchecked and growing apostasy in the PCA.  I recommend you check out the rest of her blog, Standing Fast: A Response to the False Teaching in the PCA.  Mrs. Kuo and her husband Vincent fled the PCA nearly a year ago.  The interesting thing is that Vincent was an Assistant Pastor and a member of the Ohio Valley Presbytery of the PCA for nearly ten years.  The Kuo family were members of Community Presbyterian Church and Redeemer Church which are both PCA churches in Louisville, Kentucky.  I’m not familiar with Redeemer or their pastor, David Dively, but Community Pres and their pastor, William Smith (pictured above), are by now well known to readers of this blog (see here).  It appears that instead of ridding herself of false teachers like Smith, the PCA is ridding herself of any remaining Christians, which, after all, is to be expected when churches fail to discipline men like Smith. “Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians reflects his passion , straightforwardness, and incredible insight. False teachers had infiltrated the Galatian churches, introducing a corrupt Gospel message. Paul’s strict tone was not a reflection of anger, but of intense love. His instruction was clear and direct; salvation is the result of faith, not works.

The purpose of this blog is to try to respond to the PCA with heartfelt passion and straightforward honesty. For, I believe that false teachers have infiltrated the PCA, introducing a corrupt Gospel message. Many will mistake my response as an expression of anger and bitterness. My prayer, however, is that my readers will understand that I write out of an intense love for my Savior and for His beloved bride – His church. My message to churches today mirrors Paul’s clear instruction to the Galatians; salvation is the result of faith, not works.

Legalistic Jewish Christians in Galatia were insisting that Gentile converts undergo the Jewish rite of circumcision in order to become full members of God’s family. Circumcision had come to be viewed by the Jewish Christians as a “sign” associated with salvation, and therefore a requirement for salvation. Paul clearly stated that no one is saved by the law, by good deeds, or by outward signs or rituals. Salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

This pure and simple message of the Gospel is being eroded and corrupted today by false teachers and pastors in the PCA. These false teachers have developed a whole system of legalism centered around an outward religion of church rituals and works. Their requirement for salvation is church membership, not faith in Jesus Christ alone.

As recorded in the Gospel of John: Among the rulers, many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. Some PCA pastors and leaders in the sessions and on the presbytery level have chosen not to confront the false teachers of the Federal Vision, but rather to tolerate a false gospel. Sadly, many have made this choice out of fear of losing their pulpits or their positions in the church and in the seminary. Others secretly embrace these errors in different degrees, so to confront these false teachers would be to confront themselves.

I am not writing to prove that the Federal Vision is a false gospel. That fact has been confirmed in numerous documents. If readers would like a Biblical, straightforward, and comprehensive analysis of the errors of the Federal Vision, they can turn to Mid-America Reformed Seminary’s report: Doctrinal Testimony Regarding Recent Errors.

I can only share what I have learned from Scripture with the hope that others will be encouraged to “stand fast in the liberty where with Christ has made us free”. My prayer is that each of God’s children in the PCA would not become entangled in this yoke of bondage. After three years of abuse from Federal Vision teaching and ruling elders and from our own presbytery, our family disentangled ourselves from the tyranny of this corrupt gospel and left our church and the PCA.

My husband also made the very difficult decision to give up his credentials in the PCA because he as a minister of the Gospel took to heart Paul’s warning to the Galatians: If anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed…if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ (Galatians 1:9-10). He did not want to forfeit his integrity and his bold witness for Christ by remaining in a presbytery that tolerated and promoted the Federal Vision. We pray that the hearts of PCA pastors would be stirred to heed this very serious warning as well.

    * If the errors are “secretly” embraced, how does Mrs Kuo who holds what?

She says to stand fast, be not entangled in a yoke of bondage, and hopes that PCA pastors would heed Paul’s warning in Gal. 1.

Is she calling laity and clergy to flee the PCA as she and her husband did?

It is unclear whether Mrs Kuo is calling the PCA apostate and that all believers within her pale must flee & touch not the accursed thing, or, is it just sick and in need of revival & reformation, self-discipline & housecleaning?

Is the PCA today a false church?

That question following the asterix was to have read: If the errors are “secretly” embraced, how does Mrs Kuo know who holds what?

    Thanks for your post.
Much of the PCA is replacing the Gospel with the visible church organization (“ecclesiocentricity”).
This fallible organization is said to have authority equal to the Bible (“delegation”).
This view started in the Catholic church and was in the PCUSA in the 1960’s.
A good refuatation was Dr. L. Nelson Bell’s editorial in the Presbyterian Journal- “Reversion to Rome” from the spring or summer of 1961 addressing the PCUSA.
Bishop J C Ryle’s “Knots Untied” addresses the PCA situation, though written to refute the Oxford Movement in the Anglican Church.

A fair percentage of the PCA is definitely apostate.
Just look at contenet from periodicals of the PCA founders- vs. today’s PCA idolization of a fallible organization.
A high percentage of PCA members are just ignorant and lazy.
Many are followers posing as intellectual snobs (between drinks!).
The “weasel words” used to trick the average layman are sad.
Many in the PCA use the word “Puritan” or “Reformed” for deception only.
If the apostle Paul was not immune to the Bereans’ discernment, why are the PCA men above investigation?
